July 10, 2023

So, you want to be a digital nomad (at least for a bit!), live large, no house, no car… no strings… right?

Location-independent lifestyles have gained immense popularity following the pandemic and there’s a lot of appeal to being able to explore the globe while earning a living remotely. In this blog post, we will explore practical tips and insights on how to develop marketable skills and provide information about countries that have embraced the digital nomad movement through dedicated visa programs… but where to start?

Here’s my step-by-step method to become a digital nomad:

  1. Determine Your Passions/Skills: Discovering your passions and identifying your unique skills is essential for achieving your dream of becoming a digital nomad, after all what’s the point of travel if you spend the whole time working a job you hate! Ask yourself what you genuinely enjoy doing and how you can leverage those interests into a remote career. It could be anything from writing and photography to web development or teaching English. I’ve provided a list of potential careers that mayu allow for the digital nomad life, but if none gel with you, reflect on your own talents and hobbies to unearth potential income-generating avenues, and then get creative with how you could sell yourself and your skills online.
  2. Skill Up in Your Remote Work Capacities: This means developing proficiency in communication, time management, organization, and self-discipline. Remote work often demands self-motivation and the ability to meet deadlines independently.
So, making sure you’ve got the solid basics of using online teamwork platforms like Teams, Google Suite, etc.
  3. Get Your Tech Right: No one is going to work with you if you can’t hold a meeting together due to your hardware failing you. Spend the money before you go to get:
    • A good headset
    • A solid laptop, rugged, but with enough oomph to both
  4. Learn Marketable Skills: Consider acquiring skills that are in high demand in the remote job market. Some lucrative skills include:
    • Content Creation and Copywriting: Creating compelling content for blogs, websites, social media, or digital marketing campaigns, are all lucrative careers you can do from anywhere!
    • Digital Marketing: Online marketing is a big deal and encompasses a lot of roles like; SEO, social media management, email marketing, analytics or even being an Insta-inflooooenceeerrrr.
    • Graphic Design: Graphic design, creating visuals for branding, advertising, or web design purposes are highly sought after skills if you can do them well.
    • Web Development: Whilst AI is currently replacing coders left right and centre, there will always be demand for talented people who build quality stuff using their coding knowledge. Learning coding languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build websites or web applications won’t be a waste!
    • Language Instruction: If you’re bilingual or have a strong command of a foreign language, consider teaching it remotely through online language platforms. If you’re a native English speaker, you can get a TEFL or TESOL to be able to teach overseas almost anywhere in the world!
  1. Utilize Online Learning Platforms: Take advantage of numerous online learning platforms that offer courses and tutorials to acquire new skills. Websites like Udemy, Coursera, Skillshare, and LinkedIn Learning provide a wide range of courses that you can complete at your own pace. Invest time and effort in continuous learning to stay up-to-date with industry trends and expand your skill set.
  2. Seek Remote Work Opportunities: Once you have developed marketable skills, explore remote work opportunities tailored to your expertise. There are lots of  ways to do this, but here are the ones most likely to lead to success:
    1. Utilizefreelance job market platforms (e.g. Upwork, Freelancer, or Fiverr) to find clients and projects.
    2. Network through social media,
    3. Attending virtual conferences,
    4. Join professional communities,
    5. Seek out Employers or Clients, who are happy for you to work remotely.

Digital Nomad Visa Programs: To facilitate the growing trend of digital nomadism, several countries have introduced digital nomad visa programs. These programs provide legal frameworks and benefits to attract remote workers and digital nomads. Here are a few countries that have implemented or are in the process of creating digital nomad visas:

  1. Estonia: The Estonian Digital Nomad Visa allows digital nomads to legally work and reside in Estonia for up to one year.
  2. Croatia: Croatia has introduced a one-year digital nomad visa, allowing remote workers and freelancers to reside and work in the country.
